Chanca Piedra and Liver Cell Protection

Chanca piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) is a South American botanical traditionally used for liver and kidney support, and it is part of our LivaSorb blend. The evidence behind it is mechanistic.

What the research looked at

Laboratory and animal studies used a chemically induced liver injury model to test chanca piedra's effect on liver enzymes and on glutathione, the body's natural antioxidant. Researchers measured ALT, AST, and glutathione levels in the treatment group compared to a control group to see whether the extract offered a protective effect.

Why it matters for Livana

The research found chanca piedra produced dose-dependent reductions in liver enzyme markers and helped restore glutathione levels in the injury model. This is preclinical, mechanistic evidence from animal studies rather than a completed human clinical trial. Human RCT data does not yet exist for chanca piedra, astragalus, or burdock, the three LivaSorb ingredients in that position. Its traditional use profile is well established, and the LivaSorb blend combines it with six other botanicals.
