Schisandra berries and leaves arranged with scientific glassware

Schisandra and Liver Function

Schisandra is a traditional Chinese botanical and one of the seven actives in our LivaSorb blend. Newer research has closed a real gap in the evidence base for this ingredient.

What the studies looked at

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial ran 5 months with 40 participants on a mixture of schisandra fruit extract and sesamin. Compared with placebo, the trial found the mixture significantly reduced ALT and AST, the standard liver enzyme markers, increased antioxidant capacity, and improved fatty liver appearance on imaging. A 2025 systematic review of 54 animal studies (over 1,150 animals) reports the same pattern: consistent enzyme reductions and increased natural antioxidant activity.

Why it matters for Livana

That review also notes that larger human trials are still needed to confirm the full effect size. We include schisandra in the LivaSorb proprietary blend for its traditional profile and this emerging human evidence.
